The other day by curiosity I decided to use one of the Background Check/Phone Verification and people search websites.
After signing up, I found out that for .99 cents, I was not only able to see my own information but also information of relatives of mine; including their telephone numbers and complete mailing address.
I also found out that a list of other companies had my in formation and in order for me to "opt out" or remove my information from those websites, I would need to fax or mail out a form with proof of identity.
I mean, how did they get my information in the first place?
And WHY do I have to go through all the trouble to undo something that I DID NOT do and more importantly, did not want done?!
I find it outrageous that so many companies share our information without asking for our permission.
I do not do business with companies that sell or share my information with their partners the moment I find out they did!
Regardless of how we want our lives to be private, with all the technology these days, forget about it!
With Google earth/maps anyone these days can see a picture of your home and how many cars you have parked in your driveway!
Technology makes it so much easier for criminal minds to plan the most spectacular and successful crimes these days.
I just think that we should not have to PAY to have our privacy preserved. We should have the right to not want to be exposed to the world.
No wonder why people from Nigeria are trying to scam us!
